Teachers protest over education cuts

Saturday, 15 November 2008 15:42

Teachers protesting against cuts in the education sector have gathered in Tullamore, Co Offaly this afternoon.

The Irish National Teachers' Organisation, which represents primary school teachers, said teachers and parents from Offaly, Laois, North Tipperary and Kilkenny are taking part.

Parents, principals, and representatives of boards of management will be amongst the speakers.

A protest organiser said that Fine Gael TD Olwyn Enright is the only national politician who has agreed to address the protest, which will gather at the Tullamore Court Hotel and march to O'Connor Square.

Meanwhile, education cuts are expected to be raised at the annual conference of the National Parents Council for primary schools in Athlone, Co Westmeath this weekend.

The Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe was listed in the conference agenda to open proceedings this morning. He did not address the delegates.
